MUSIC
IN OUR LIVES
Few
would deny the importance and influence music plays in our
lives. Using the sounds and words of music to evoke stories
and memories is a sure way to get student voices heard,
or simply to introduce new themes or topics for discussion.
We begin our journey with a discussion of the role and impact
of music in our lives, using the weblog
to reflect on the relationship between music and our own
individual sense of self, community, culture, power and
change.
Guiding
Questions
What is hip hop today? What is the current
state of affairs of our world/society as reflected through
hip hop today? As artists, scholars, students, activists,
community members, and consumers of hip hop music, what
is our responsibility towards the culture of hip hop? How
do you understand music in terms of its physical, psychological
and spiritual influences? How does music help you understand
or express yourself? In your opinion, what reflection does
the music of today give of our views, values and beliefs
as a society?

CREATIVE
NARRATIONS
Storytelling
is a great way to get people interested in and attentive
to what they are learning. In the process of creating their
own multimedia creative narrations, students learn how to
do research, conduct interviews, write in a variety of styles,
work collaboratively and more.

WORDS
2 WEB
Topic
maps have always been great ways to organize our information,
and the web has now forever changed the way we store and
navigate this information. Drawing on the power of both,
it is simple today for us to construct, connect and exchange
important knowledge around particular topics in 'real' face-to-face
time or via the web.

MULTIMEDIA
PRODUCTION

Using
media tools and technologies has become a prerequisite for
many occupations in the 21st century. In fact, most jobs
now require at least some basic computer competencies. By
creating their own media (audio recordings, short films,
slide presentations, websites), students gain experience
using digital media devices as well as several cutting-edge
computer-based applications to produce original final works
that can be shared with the world via the web. Integrating
multimedia production assignments as part of the curriculum
is a good way to motivate students to learn more by investigating
their own lives and environments, creating their own stories
and developing a variety of skills (like planning, collaboration
and technology).
